Y’OH THIS IS APRIL’S MUST ATTEND EVENT! Is your head ready?

Y’OH Streetwear Launch x Kids Of Grime Photography Exhibition 28 April at Pure Evil Gallery

This month sees the launch of mens streetwear label Y’OH and photographer Kids Of Grime’s first solo photography exhibition.

The launch will be held at  Pure Evil art gallery, situated in the heart of Hoxton. A pioneering force in the contemporary street art world, it consistently demonstrates it’s worth by exhibiting a myriad of young International and British artists as well as staging international shows; most recently in Berlin, Amsterdam, Sydney, Sao Paulo and most notably in Beijing.

The night will see Kids Of Grime aka photographer Verena Stefanie’s first solo exhibition and equally important the first ever Grime photography exhibition. Verena’s ‘documentary’ of grime  has evolved into a project that involves all artists-emcees, moments, radio sets, studio sessions, something which goes behind the scenes and gives an insight into it, something to show in the future what was going in the present time. Although she has photographed numerous big names, Skepta, P Money, Newham Generals… she endeavours to show no partiality towards anyone, instead she supports talent over hype.  Her work has also expanded into video and she also runs a website which is translated into Italian and Spanish in order to introduce the scene to people overseas. Her photographs are not only significant for the music scene but also for british culture.

Fashion Designer Kara Messina will be showcasing the Y’OH streetwear’s first collection “Heads Ain’t Ready”. It’s not your standard mainstream streetwear, prior to this Kara worked in high fashion for 6 years and has maintained that level of quality. Her skills as a pattern cutter allowed her to cut the collection herself so even the fit of the garments aren’t stereotypical to what’s around at the moment. She describes the silhouette as having a 90s feel to it “No skinny looks, Big Up oversize!”. Y’OH consists of outerwear, shirts and non-jersey tshirts. The context of the printed fabric used in the collection is set to blow your minds. Inspired by comparing Hip Hop to Grime; Mens transition from youth to adult; 90s Fashion; Subcultural affiliation to brands and functional performance garments.  The market level is in between luxury and streetwear and will be sold on the online Y’OH store.

Y’OH and Kids Of Grime have collaborated on a project together for the event which is a series of photos that will be exhibted on the night of the show. There will also be a collaborative poster for sale to commemorate the evening.

The First Lady Meets…Jane Fraser

Jane Fraser, where blues meets soul, folk and pop!

When did you discover your talent?

For as long as I can remember I have been singing, my father is a singer as well so I grew up with music in my house. When I was about 5 years old my mom enrolled me in a stage school and there was no looking back from there really. I went once a week and learned dance, drama and music. I did go onto study dance after I left school but soon decided it was the wrong road and music was my real passion.

http://www.myspace.com/missjanefraser/videos/gentle-touch/61376601 < I think this is my favourite track so far!

What motivates and inspires your music/ poetry?

Everything and anything really!  I usually start with melody and find that most of the time I have some kind of music going on inside my head. I am always toying around with melodies and tend to veer slightly towards jazz and blue chords. If a really good melody comes to me then I start writing and the subject matter can range from relationships to emotions to work…I try to tap into something that has happened to me personally, recall an emotion or situation and then write about that.

Only Human ft Jane Fraser

Describe your audience?

My audience would probably be late teens upwards really, but I’d like to think that anyone could find something that they can identify with in my music. Sometimes I am really surprised at the songs that people say are their favourites so I suppose it’s hard to categorise people.

What keeps you going when you don’t want to/ have a set back?

Well I won’t lie, I have more than once considered packing it in and taking an easier road. But when you consider the reality of that I kind of think, well what else would I do? I don’t think I can actually live without music, it’s such a massive part of me that I simply can’t turn my back on it. It makes me happy and I’d like to think that it makes other people happy too, ultimately that is what it is about.

What are your plans for the rest of 2011 (and beyond)?

I will be spending a lot of time writing and recording this year for my album. Getting out and gigging also, building up a following for my music. I love performing and once I have full live set ready to go I just want to keep doing that really!

Where can we find you?

I found out about Jane Fraser via a dear friend and am very please for the hook up.  Jane has a really cool bluesey, soulful, folk sounding voice.  I love the way she utilises her musical influences to create her sound.  I look forward to her future and her performance at The First Lady Fayre in May!

The First Lady Meets…Ola The Poet (When words become art)

Ola The Poet and verbal visionary!

When did you discover your talent?

It wasn’t so much of discovering it but noticing that I could actually write. My English teacher always said something to me when she saw my scribble of poetry and I didn’t take any notice of it. When a situation in school took place I wrote about it and when someone got a hold of it they made fun of it but a close friend of mine was like, ‘how did you do that? It’s really good’. So I continued to write and haven’t stopped since. I have lost a few books (hangs hands in head and weeps) but I seem to always write regardless. <thank God for the teacher and school friend!

What motivates and inspires your music/ poetry?

Life is my inspiration, especially mine and those around me. I am inspired by experiences most of the time I tell them through the eyes of others experiences. Anything that affects me I write about it, I am an emotional person and I am driven most times by my emotion so if something evokes a strong enough emotion in my then I would write about it.

Describe your audience?

My audience varies really… Every event I go to the audience is different depending on the cause… I have performed in a room filled with educators whom were putting a campaign together for better learning in schools then shortly after in a room filled with university students.

What keeps you going when you don’t want to/ have a set back?

Well my gift keeps me positive despite life’s set backs as well as being a believer in the God I serve. He shows me the way when there doesn’t seem to be any. My sisters always keep me going too. They make any situation seem so minor with the way their eyes perceive it as well as making me laugh they always have my back.

What are your plans for the rest of 2011 (and beyond)?

Well my plan is to continue, living, writing and utilising my surroundings to the best of my ability. The bigger plan is to have Crisis Clinics for Mental Health sufferers in Sierra Leone as well as Ghana and Nigeria…(Kenema’s Big Sister would love to support this in some way) I am currently working on qualifying as a Mental Health Nurse and hopefully put things in place for that journey to continue.

You know when words give you goosebumps and you hang off every single word waiting for where the next one will take you?  This is what Ola The Poets words do to me.  I haven’t managed to see a live performance yet but will ensure that I am able to be still and soak up her words at The First Lady event on 22nd May and then I will be a groupie and attend as many performances as I can and whoop and cheer.  Ola’s poetry is sheer class.

The First Lady Meets…Katie Ryan CEO of Pink ‘N’ Black Entertainment +++

Katie Ryan – CEO of Pink ‘N’ Black Entertainment and much MUCH more!

What is Pink ‘N’ Black Entertainment?

Pink ‘N’ Black is an Entertainment / Events /Management / Marketing and PR company based in South London.

What lead you into a career in model management?

To be honest I fell into Model management after doing my event “Facebook Model” which was a competition for upcoming models to showcase themselves to the industry. It was at a shoot of one of the finalists that I took on my first serious model “Carmen Leigh” we started to work together I did her PR built up my contacts in the modelling industry and found a love for it! I no longer work with Carmen but it was a great experience and it helped me develop into the manager I am today! I manage models Sasha Shantel and Salena Lima :)

Many people will judge what you do and say that you are supporting the ‘objectification’ of women, what do you say to that?

Modelling is a form of human art if you look at how an image is put together from the choice of model to the concept of the image and how the photographer set’s up the lighting and takes the final image it’s artistic so I appreciate and support the art of modelling. Also Sasha and Salena are not objects to me they are people and with that both are very intelligent when I manage models it’s not about how much money I can make from them it’s about how I can help develop them in a career path they have chosen to do! Both have there own limits in the kind of modelling they do I respect these limits and ensure that they are not taken advantage of from outsiders. If people wish to judge me on this basis then so be it! Either with or without me both would continue to model so it’s better they have a safe support system behind them. < I hear that as many model managers can be wolves in sheep’s clothing!

What have been your biggest challenges if any as a female in model management?

I don’t feel there is major challenges for me as a female manager for modelling but with any part of the entertainment industry females always find it harder to gain the respect of males in that industry our jobs a lot harder also as a female I am more emotionally attached to my models which can be hard if others put them down or they are having a hard time in there business or personal life. I don’t feel male managers have the same connection with there models to them they are models doing a job to me they are females who have trusted me to look after and guide them.

What else do you do?  I know model management is not the only business you have…

With Pink ‘N’ Black I do so many different things Model management, Business PR, Entertainment PR, Design, Events, Artist management, Artist development, social media marketing and promotions. I also own another company Team UK Talents LTD which is a showcase event I am in the midst of developing that company in to something more ;-) < I look forward to seeing/ hearing more…

Currently I PR these people:
Emonie music producer / songwriter
Stacey Hewson UK model winner of Facebook Model 2010
Melanie Songbird USA Artist (She’s a new client)
Kosher Photographer
I also do PR for 5 Femelle managed models Sashia Summers, Eden Black, Char, Fran and Destiny

I do Business PR / Marketing for:
Koshmo Entertainment
Femelle studios
Candy Mag UK
In-SpireLS Magazine
Happy2host

I model manage:
Sasha Shantel
Salena Lima

I think that is everyone LOL!  < My goodness does Katie have and S on her chest?  I am astounded!!

Thanks to first lady  for a great interview :) you can find info on all my clients on any of my social network sites :)

The First Lady Meets…SangaHQ First Lady DJ!

The one and only SangaHQ – Future sound boy KILLA!

What lead you to your interest in DJ-ing?

I suppose right from the start I was possessed by music; most young girls were listening the top 40 but I would be taping obscure radio shows that played hip hop and early house music; we’d have school discos and I’d be up on the stage, eyes closed and dancing my heart out! I was nine. From there it was always about dancing, going out and listening to new music. I went to my first rave when I was about 13 in Bristol and later that summer we ran away to Glastonbury festival. It was a really hedonistic time and dub music, hanging out at raves and sound clashes became a way of life, more so, as most of my friends were DJs or part of a rave crew and we’d drive all over the country to see them play. Amazing times! I wanted to get involved in the party so I studied sound engineering and got into writing about and organising events. It’s actually only recently I decided to focus on DJing properly and gave up organising parties to get behind the decks and practice mixing.

What sort of music do you play and why?

I play what I like to call ‘grimy world music’. At the moment this is lots of baile funk, funky bashment, dub styles, bass, garage, jungle, african house, uk grime and a sprinkling of old rave tunes. I love drum rhythms that just command you to dance and you cant help but yelp like a fool and shake something at the drop. Crews like Buraka Som Sistema get this vibe SO right. I’d love to have a crew. Well in fact a whole sound system! We’d be called King Pineapple (*I want to be in King Pineapple!). Ha! Massive!

Have you encountered any challenges being a female DJ? If yes what have they been?

Not at all. It’s true the scene is kind of one big bro-mance but I think as a new artist, male or female, you just have to get stuck in. All industries have a different gender balance, I’m not going to be put off by being a minority when it could potentially be a benefit and I certainly don’t think the music industry needs a suffragette movement which appears to be a commercial favourite at the moment! In my opinion, these days, women in music have every technical and creative opportunity available, it’s just a matter of networking. *This, this, this is the attitude The First Lady loves! Do your thing, just get out there and do it!

If you were not a Dj what would you be doing?

Excellent question! In a fantasy world, I would be running a carnival like Notting Hill or building a grand design with Kevin McCloud. In fact, just to design and build a house would be amazing.

What can we expect to hear from you at The First Lady Fayre?

Lots of boom shack a lacking tunes mixed with some world sounds… whaddya reckon? * Big I can’t wait!

Follow @SangaHQ on Twitter

@KenemaGirl has had the pleasure of listening to a little mix by SangaHQ and played the mix consistently for nearly a month it was her wake up music!  Sanga knows how to get a party started!  We absolutely love Sanga’s just get out there and do it attitude, it is essential for anyone aiming to succeed.  I am hugely impressed by SangaHQ’s escape to Glasto that deserves 10 cool points, please note we do not advocate running away to attend a festival by any means! Make sure you get down to The First Lady Fayre on 22nd May to hear `ms HQ for yourself!

The First Lady Meets…Mikill Pane (First Lady Host)

Mikill Pane – One of the UK’s finest musicians

How and When did you realise that you had a musical talent?

I was actually created by Justin Smith Uzomba for the sole purpose of polluting the world with the contents of his warped imagination.  I always knew.

The Return of Mister Pane

How would you describe your musical style?

With adjectives. * Touché

What inspires your music?

Marijuana, the female body, sex and Hackney.  In that order.

Party Animal Remix

If you could work with any female artist who would that be and why?

Cheryl Cole.  It would be an elaborate set-up though.  I’d make her think we were recording a tune together, then tie her hands behind her back and lock her in the studio with the ‘black bitch’ she punched the living daylights out of before a mug like Will.I.Am decided to be her best friend.

Little Lady (with Ed Sheeran)

You are hosting the first lady event, who do you consider to be a first lady (past present or future) and why?

Maybe Eve from the Bible.  Apparently she was the first lady.  Perhaps all the women before her were rather slutty.  Actually, my mum.  I mean I consider her to be the first lady, not that she’s slutty.  Or thousands of years old…
I hope she never reads this.  *You are not too old to stand on 1 leg with your arms in the air as a punishment you know (a favoured West African punishment commonly known as ‘pick pin’)

Any forthcoming gigs?

Yeah, way too many to mention.  Check http://mikillpane.com for full listings.

Roses Gabor (@RosesGabor)  introduced Tamu (@KenemaGirl) to Mikill Pane in July last year and she became and instant fan!  Mikill Pane challenges the stereotype of Black Male rappers with his slick, highly amusing and intellectual  rhythmical satire.  Mikil’s lyrical content is at best politically incorrect and at worse so out of order it is hilarious!  If you can’t handle it just don’t listen.  The First Lady firmly believes that Mr Pane is destined for greatness and can’t wait to see him on a huge stage with flashing lights smothered in Kenema & Co menswear!  Mr Pane will be hosting the event alongside Roses Gabor, please turn your sensitivity levels down and Mikill keep it clean there will be children in the house!

The First Lady Meets…Chyna Desveaux, Model, Actress, Presenter, Unstoppable.

Chyna Desveaux – watch out world she’s about to take over!

I have seen you in a number of music video’s and observed your online presence.  I admire the fact that you do not ‘over sexualise’ yourself and promote positivity.  Was this a conscious decision and why?

Yes, it was a conscious decision, when I was first approached to do videos I realised what sort of reputation video models have and was really concious of getting into that industry. Once being on set I realised it doesnt need to have that image and I wanted to change it, I believe your there to do a job and to get more work you need to keep professional, People do not want to work with someone who is all about socialising and doing the job at minimum effort, your there to do a job so it needs to be done 100%, I do think there needs to be a fine line between mixing business with pleasure. I also have hand picked what videos I appeared in and made sure I knew the role before hand, alot of my videos are based on acting roles so it all connects into what I am trying to get into. Exclusivity is really important in this industry!

I respect everyone may have a dream and if they can hold self respect and are happy in what they do then I say chase the dream, but they need to be sure of what they want to do, one wrong move could tarnish your whole image so do think carefully before grabbing every opportunity thats handed to you. Never the less, im a strong believer that keeping positive helps you reach your dreams, you attract what you think, think positive and you attract positive things.

You are an actress, presenter, model, event organiser and you have a 9-5 how do you manage all of this?

lol Being organised! I make sure all bookings are booked in advance and I also get a day off in the week of my 9-5 which can be different every week so I can usually book stuff in on my day off, also using the weekends aswell!

Ideally which of the above would you like to focus on and why?

Ahh thats hard! I love presenting because I can be myself and get to meet loads of different people and find out so much about there careers when interviewing however I do love acting and modelling as you can turn into a totally different character! I think Presenting is where im steering towards at the moment but having options to do afew things is a must! I’d love to aim for the modelling and big billboards but I think everything you’ve mentioned above will be around for a long time in my life!

Tell me about the TT and CC show…

The TT and CC Show is a show to broadcast London and the UK! Whats hot, whats not and just representing the UKs talents whatever they may be. We were approached by Michael Uliha who is a radio presenter and budding enterpenur in the USA who asked us to film segements for his new TV Show starting up on US Cable and also a Webseries, we have started filming eposides and hopefully it will be a hit! If it works in the states who knows we may just put it forward to some of the UK stations! so its all exciting, defiently think UK Talent is growing quickly so we need something to broadcast it so everyone knows about it!

What does the future hold for Chyna Desveaux (love this name)?

Aww thank you! Believe it or not its my real name! Miss Made to be known is the stage name =) So about The Future…It holds everything! It has no limits for me! I want to be successful in everything I do and I certenially dont think success is held in one field per person, if you have the talent to do more than one

thing then do it! I want to be inspriational to people in the industry, ones that want to get into the industry and even people who are not in it! Hopefully when I am successful that happens! Things to look out for are the TT and CC Show, Also a show im working on for UK Talent which I cant say too much about just yet! but is one to look out for and alot of other projects with my name on it =D

Facebook Chyna Desveaux Model

Chyna will be our official presenter on 22nd May (make sure you look on point as this will be filmed!), one of the reasons that Chyna was approached to conduct interviews etc at The First Lady is because we love the fact that she is professional, hard working, positive and wants to be recognised for her ability not just her gorgeous looks.  You will notice that she isn’t practically naked in her video appearances and her TT and CC show is about two young women doing their thing rather than being sexual objects.  Chyna has managed to balance sex appeal with class and we love  that!

The First Lady Meets… DJ Sadiq Bello (Our first Male feature!)

Our first male feature! DJ Sadiq Bello

What inspired you to embark on a career within music?

I admit it sounds pretty cliche to say but I have always been interested in music. However that being said, art was my true first love. I began drawing at the age of three and gradually moved on from there. I have been involved in everything from painting, to dancing, singing, rapping, photography, acting, directing etc. So it was like a time-bomb waiting to explode.

You started off as a producer and then went on to become a DJ tell us why as most people start off DJ-ing then progress to production?

Well the way I became a producer was because I was already song-writing and taking singing lessons so I decided to also become my own producer over time. Becoming a DJ only kicked in later because I found myself experimenting on a pair of CD decks my friend had at his house. So I decided to take a pop. As I grew largely in love with DJing I also started opening my knowledge to other genere’s and so my producing changed as well.

Describe your musical style.

Funnily enough I have been asked this question millions of times and I always give a variety of different answers lol. But within the same category. Im influenced by pretty much everything from folk to hip hop. But my style is a bit Future Garage, Electronic, Breakstep-ishh lol. Does that answer the question? <— Erm kinda?

http://www.mixcloud.com/belloDJ/radioone-mistajam-mix/

DJ’s can be instrumental to a musicians career how would you like to use your ‘power’ as a DJ?

I have never imagined being somebody else’s DJ I suppose. Like on tours and gigs. But as a DJ I use my power to be able to introduce new music from unheard yet talented producers of the current generation. I also fuse this with old school classics that other DJs are not playing anymore. In short, music is a way of life and so I would like to use my ‘power’ as a DJ to alter this way of life in a more positive way. If possible by subliminally spreading a peace and love message through the lyrics of the records I play, whether that be in a club or on a radio station.

http://www.mixcloud.com/belloDJ/roundhouse-mix/

You are DJ-ing at The First Lady Fayre, in your opinion what are the qualities that make a woman a ‘First Lady’?

Oh my. Well… The qualities that make a ‘first lady’ I suppose would be the same qualities that makes anybody worth living their life, which is no.1 believing in yourself. Once that is taken care of. The rest will follow. I guarantee. If she can make me see that she is the greatest woman alive. what more else do I need? :D

Any forthcoming gigs?

April is a bit of a quiet month I guess because everybody is either working on graduating or finishing up last exams. But in May I got a wedding on the 13th. A birthday on the 28th. You of course on the 22nd :) and there are talks of a Bank Holiday special on May 1st but nothings been confirmed for that. Alternatively though you can catch me broadcasting every saturday afternoon between 12pm and 2pm on http://visionradiouk.com bit of news, gossip and music.

Before anyone says anything, yes The First Lady is about women, but whilst we support women we do not exclude men.  We know that ying needs yang and all that (or should that be oestrogen needs testosterone?)!  Men and Women are designed to work together, so we have selected men that we respect and believe will compliment our work.  Sadiq being one of them.  @KenemaGirl is a fan of housey, dubby, old skool kind of sounds and Sadiq hits the nail right on the head.  Sadiq is a cool DJ and also a cool person his work ethic and personal ethos are to be admired, he just wants people to feel good and we do too! Come to The First Lady Fayre to see what this young man is all about
